What Is a Discord Permissions Calculator?
A Discord permissions calculator lets you select Discord permissions and combine them into a single permission integer. You can also paste an existing permission integer to see exactly which permission flags it contains.
It is useful for bot developers who need to configure the permissions in a bot invite link, server administrators who want to understand individual permission flags, and anyone who needs to inspect a permission value found in a bot setup, a role export or an API response.
How to Use the Discord Permissions Calculator
To calculate a permission integer
- Tick the permissions you want, or start from a preset such as Basic bot.
- Check the selected permissions summary and the resulting integer.
- Copy the integer, or add your client ID to generate a bot invite link.
To decode an existing integer
- Paste the decimal permission integer into the input field.
- Review the ticked permissions and the selected summary.
- If a warning lists unrecognised bits, those flags are not defined in this calculator.
How Discord Permission Integers Work
Discord stores permissions as a bit set. Every permission owns one bit position, and the permission integer is the sum of the bit values of all selected permissions. The bit value of position N is 2 to the power of N, written 1 << N in code.
| Permission | Bit | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Create Invite | 0 | 1 |
| Administrator | 3 | 8 |
| View Channels | 10 | 1,024 |
| Send Messages | 11 | 2,048 |
| Send Polls | 49 | 562,949,953,421,312 |
To combine permissions, Discord uses a bitwise OR. View Channels (1,024) plus Send Messages (2,048) gives 3,072. To check whether a permission is set, use a bitwise AND against its bit value.
// JavaScript: BigInt keeps all 64 bits exact
const VIEW_CHANNEL = 1n << 10n; // 1024n
const SEND_MESSAGES = 1n << 11n; // 2048n
// Combine with OR
const permissions = VIEW_CHANNEL | SEND_MESSAGES; // 3072n
// Check with AND
const canSend = (permissions & SEND_MESSAGES) === SEND_MESSAGES; // true
// Bot invite link

- General server permissions. Control channel visibility and server-wide management such as channels, roles, webhooks, expressions, the audit log and server settings.
- Membership permissions. Cover creating invites, nicknames and moderating members: kicking, banning and timing them out.
- Text permissions. Control sending messages, embeds, attachments, reactions, threads, polls, pins, slash commands and message management.
- Voice permissions. Cover connecting, speaking, video, soundboard, Activities, voice channel status and moderating voice participants.
- Event permissions. Control who can create scheduled events and who can manage events created by others.
- Administrative permissions. Administrator grants every permission and bypasses channel overwrites, so treat it very differently from ordinary flags.
Discord adds new permission flags from time to time. This calculator was last checked against the official Discord permissions documentation in October 2026.
How to Calculate Permissions for a Discord Bot
Choose only the permissions your bot needs for its job. A moderation bot may need Kick Members, Ban Members, Timeout Members and Manage Messages, while a bot that posts updates may only need View Channels, Send Messages and Embed Links.
- Start from the closest preset, then remove everything you do not use.
- Avoid Administrator unless the bot truly needs it. Fewer permissions limit the damage from a bug or a leaked bot token.
- Remember that permissions marked 2FA need the server owner to have two-factor authentication on 2FA-enforced servers.
- Pass the integer as the permissions parameter of your bot invite (OAuth2 authorization) URL.
Important Limitations of Permission Integers
A permission integer describes a set of flags. It does not by itself tell you what a member can do in a particular server or channel.
- Administrator grants all permissions and bypasses channel permission overwrites.
- Channel overwrites can allow or deny permissions for roles and members in individual channels, so a role's server-level permissions are only the starting point.
- Multiple roles combine: a member gets the union of the permissions of all their roles.
- Role hierarchy limits what a bot or moderator can do to others. For example, a bot can only kick, ban or rename members whose highest role is below its own highest role.
- Timed-out members temporarily lose all permissions except View Channels and Read Message History, unless they are the owner or an administrator.
- Threads inherit permissions from their parent channel, but sending messages in a thread needs Send Messages in Threads rather than Send Messages.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Discord permission integer?
A Discord permission integer is a single number that represents a set of permission flags. Each permission corresponds to one bit, so many permissions can be combined into one value, for example 3072 for View Channels plus Send Messages.
How do I calculate Discord bot permissions?
Tick the permissions your bot needs in the calculator and copy the resulting integer. You can use it as the permissions value in your bot invite (OAuth2 authorization) URL, or add your client ID in the calculator to generate that link automatically. Pick the smallest set of permissions the bot actually needs.
How do I decode a Discord permissions integer?
Paste the decimal integer into the input field. The calculator ticks every permission whose bit is set in that number. If the number contains bits the calculator does not recognise, it lists them in a warning instead of silently ignoring them.
What does the Administrator permission do?
Administrator grants every permission and bypasses channel permission overwrites. Only give it to a bot or role when it genuinely needs that level of access, because a mistake or a compromised bot token has far larger consequences.
Does this calculator need the Discord API or my bot token?
No. Permission integers are plain bit arithmetic, so everything is calculated locally in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere, and no login, bot token or password is needed. Checking the real permissions of a specific member in a specific server is a different task that needs server data or API access.
Does a permission integer show everything a member can do?
No. The integer only describes a set of permission flags. A member’s effective permissions also depend on all their roles, channel permission overwrites, the server owner and Administrator rules, and the role hierarchy.
What is the difference between bot invite permissions and channel permissions?
The integer in a bot invite link sets the permissions given to the bot’s managed role when it is added to a server. Channel permission overwrites can still allow or deny individual permissions per channel, so the bot’s access in a given channel is not decided by the invite integer alone.
What happens if my integer contains bits the calculator does not recognise?
The calculator keeps those bits in the integer, lists their bit positions in a warning and offers to remove them. This means it never pretends the displayed permission list is complete for a number that contains unknown flags.
Why do I need BigInt for Discord permissions?
Current permission flags go above bit 50, which is larger than the maximum safe integer in JavaScript (2^53 - 1) when combined. Discord sends permissions as strings for this reason. In JavaScript, parse them with BigInt rather than Number to avoid losing precision.
Which Discord permissions require two-factor authentication?
Permissions such as Administrator, Manage Server, Manage Roles, Manage Channels, Manage Webhooks, Manage Messages, Manage Threads, Manage Expressions, Kick Members, Ban Members and View Creator Monetization Analytics require the server owner to have 2FA enabled when the server enforces 2FA for moderators. The calculator marks them with a 2FA badge.
Is the Discord Permissions Calculator free?
Yes. It is free, needs no login, and you can build or decode as many permission integers as you like.
